ABOUT BLACK DOG RANCH

Black Dog Ranch is a small, veteran-owned ranch and flower farm in Cheney, Washington, run by Megan and Josh. As veterans, they bring intention and care to how the land is managed, with a focus on permaculture-inspired practices, integrated livestock, and long-term land stewardship. The ranch is less about chasing maximum output and more about doing things the right way - working with natural systems, building healthy soil, and making sure the land is better off year after year.

How the Land Is Managed

Land at Black Dog Ranch is managed with a focus on long-term health rather than short-term output. Goats and pigs are integrated into the system to help clear land for growing and naturally contribute amendments back to the soil. Chemical inputs are avoided whenever possible, and the goal is to continually reduce reliance on outside inputs by building fertility and resilience directly into the land itself.

Why the Ranch Exists

Black Dog Ranch exists because Megan and Josh wanted to grow flowers in a way that actively improves the land they’re working on. The goal isn’t just production, but contribution — building healthier soil, integrating animals into the system, and seeing the long-term results of that work take shape year after year. Growing uncommon flower varieties allows the ranch to offer something different locally, while staying grounded in practices that prioritize soil health and stewardship.

The Ranch Dogs

Like any working ranch, Black Dog Ranch comes with a full crew of dogs — eight of them, to be exact. Ranging from a Great Pyrenees down to a Chihuahua, they’re very much part of daily life here. Lupita, Lobo, Oso, Bandit, Zeus, Love, Winnifred, and Togo are working companions, morale boosters, and constant reminders that life on the ranch is never quiet — or boring.
